I’m having trouble figuring out who is buying these brand new, 4-cyl equipped German executive sedans for $50k. I mean a new E300 weighs at least 3,800 lbs and comes with a 241 hp 4-cylinder for the low cost of $52,150. Help me out tonight and create a
three vehicle garage
using any vehicles you want as long as they
cost between $48,000 to $55,000
each
! This segment is so dense with everything and nothing that I’m overwhelmed!!

I have 2 v8 5-series but could seriously see myself buying an entry level motor in 10 years when I am (hopefully) richer (and older). My wife has a 2.5L x3 and thinks it is plenty fast. 241hp will get you to and from work easy.

I’m just not understanding who the customer is anymore for a $50k 5-Series or $52k E-Class Sedan. The engines aren’t the size that older shoppers want. Newer shoppers would rather have the CUV. Enthusiast would rather a smaller car with more engine. The comfort, tech, and interior crowd would rather a the FWD-based luxury cars. Then the value shoppers won’t touch it. I’m not even sure it’s a badge snob at that price point since it isn’t entry level. Just can’t figure it out with the way these cars drive right now. 5 years ago, sure! But right now?

People that still want a sedan vs an SUV - think middle aged executives that don’t have to cart their kids around much. Too old to care about speed anymore but want the luxury and are badge snobs to a degree. I do consulting for large small businesses and know a shitload of CxOs that would or do drive 528s and their ilk

1. Mercedes GLA45 AMG (totally sold after Jonny Lieberman’s glowing review), which can be had for just at or barely over $54k, amazing engine
2. 2017 Lincoln MKZ, super pretty and a loaded top trim Black Label clocks in at just over $50k
3. CPO Tesla Model S. My favorite car, and a low-mileage example with a good amount of options is right around $50k

Yeah, this trend of putting tinier engines in fatter cars needs to reverse. Pretty much impossible to get 8 cylinders in anything under 3800 pounds, or even 6 cylinders under 3400.

No more V6? Yikes.

Maybe you are overthinking it, we know a lot about cars, there are people who don’t know how the engine works and don’t care. Ooo it’s comfortable and has a star on it. I would never buy a new car, I think it’s really stupid, but someone has to. My wife would buy a car on looks alone, she likes the Lexus SUV, end of story,

Well they are making the power of a 5 series was making (220-290) 15 years ago so it's not that crazy. I think the clientele buying these don't mind making someone wait.
